How to choose methylene blue in the UK
Methylene blue is sold in the UK at widely different grades and prices. Six things separate a specified pharmaceutical-grade solution from an unspecified one. Each can be checked before you buy.
USP, not aquarium or technical
Methylene blue is sold as aquarium, technical and USP grade. USP grade is made to a published pharmacopoeial monograph with defined limits on related substances and residual solvents. The other grades carry no such specification.
Tested by someone else
A supplier can test its own product or send it to an accredited laboratory. Ask which. ICP-MS screening measures lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury — the contaminants that matter for a dye-derived compound.
Results you can actually read
Claiming purity and publishing the certificate are different things. A certificate that can be checked names the laboratory, the batch, the analysis date and the method. Anything less cannot be verified.
1% means 10 mg per millilitre
A 1% w/v solution contains 10 mg of methylthioninium chloride per millilitre. A figure on a label is nominal until an assay confirms it. Ask whether the stated strength was measured or assumed.
Cobalt glass, not clear
Methylthioninium chloride degrades on exposure to visible light. Cobalt glass filters the wavelengths responsible; clear glass and plastic do not. The container determines how well a solution holds its stated strength.
Made, not resold
Most UK sellers buy in bulk and decant. A manufacturer can produce batch records, name the facility and trace the raw material. Ask where it was made and who made it.
